NetIQ is an enterprise software company specializing in identity, access, security, and data center management. Founded in 1995 by Ching-Fa Hwang, Her-daw Che, Hon Wong, Ken Prayoon Cheng, and Thomas R. Kemp, the company initially focused on performance-monitoring software for businesses with an internet presence. Its first product, AppManager, launched in 1996 and was designed to monitor performance across large-scale networks.
The firm has a long history of mergers and acquisitions that have shaped its trajectory. A key milestone was its 2000 merger with Mission Critical Software, a $1.4 billion deal that expanded NetIQ's focus into systems management. Over the years, NetIQ made several acquisitions, including Webtrends in 2001 and PentaSafe Security Technologies in 2002, to bolster its security and web analytics capabilities. The company's ownership has changed hands multiple times. In 2006, AttachmateWRQ acquired NetIQ for approximately $495 million. This entity later became The Attachmate Group, which was subsequently acquired by British firm Micro Focus International in a $1.2 billion deal in 2014. Most recently, in 2023, OpenText completed its acquisition of Micro Focus, bringing NetIQ under its corporate umbrella.
NetIQ provides a comprehensive suite of software solutions that help organizations manage user access, enforce security policies, and maintain regulatory compliance in hybrid IT environments. Its business model centers on selling software licenses and subscriptions to enterprise clients. The product portfolio is organized into three main categories: identity and access management, security management, and data center management. Flagship offerings include NetIQ Identity Manager for automating the user identity lifecycle, NetIQ Access Manager for providing secure single sign-on (SSO), and NetIQ Privileged Account Manager for controlling access to sensitive systems. These tools are designed to give organizations visibility and control over who has access to what resources, thereby mitigating risk while improving operational efficiency.
