NetGenesis Corp. was a business/productivity software company founded in 1994 and headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The founder was Matt Cutler. The company provided software and professional services focused on e-business intelligence, enabling clients to analyze online customer behavior to improve their internet-based operations.
The core of its offering was enterprise web analytic software that allowed businesses to collect, store, and interpret detailed information about visitors to their websites. This software could import customer data from both online and offline systems, creating a comprehensive data repository called an eDataMart. From this repository, clients could generate reports on metrics such as user reach, conversion rates, and customer loyalty to quantify the return on investment of various web initiatives, from marketing campaigns to site design enhancements. Intended for large enterprises, the NetGenesis platform was designed for scalability and customization, gathering data from web transaction logs or its own server plug-in. Beyond the software, the firm offered a suite of professional services, including strategic analytic consulting, product implementation, and training programs.
NetGenesis raised a total of $113M in funding from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, Boston Millennia Partners, and CRV. The company went public in 2000 and was acquired by SPSS Inc. in late 2001 for $44.6M. SPSS was later acquired by IBM in 2009.
