NetDoktor.de is an online health portal that provides the general public with medical information and services. The company was founded in 1999, with the German version launching at Christmas of that year. It was established by the Danish doctor Carl Brandt and journalist Rune Bech. The concept was born out of Brandt's research on the significant impact of doctor-patient communication on healthcare outcomes. This led to the creation of a platform designed to make medical information accessible and understandable to everyone.
The company operates in the digital health information market, serving the general public in German-speaking countries. Its primary offering is a website featuring a vast repository of articles on diseases, symptoms, treatments, lab values, nutrition, and wellness, all curated by a team of doctors, biologists, and specialist journalists. To engage users, NetDoktor provides interactive tools such as a symptom checker, medical self-tests, and quizzes. The content is free for users, and the business generates revenue through advertising and content licensing. A print magazine was also launched in 2012, available at newsstands and online.
NetDoktor.de was acquired by Holtzbrinck Digital in 2007. A significant milestone occurred in August 2019, when Hubert Burda Media took ownership of the portal, integrating it into its BurdaLife media group. This acquisition was part of Burda's strategy to expand its competence in the health sector and support the digital transformation of the industry. In February 2021, Burda also acquired the country-specific domains for Austria (netDoktor.at) and Switzerland (netdoktor.ch), further solidifying its market position.
