Net Power Inc. operates as a clean energy technology firm, focused on delivering affordable and reliable electricity with minimal environmental impact. The company was established on January 8, 2010, with its origins tracing back to a collaboration in 2009 between industrial gas scientist Rodney Allam and the technology firm 8 Rivers. They jointly invented and patented a process for generating emissions-free power from fossil fuels, known as the "Allam Cycle." Net Power was formed to hold the exclusive rights for the natural gas application of this cycle.
The company's core business revolves around licensing its proprietary power generation system, the NET Power Cycle, to customers such as project developers and owners. This asset-light licensing model allows for scalable engagement with multiple projects simultaneously, generating revenue through license fees and recurring annual royalties. The business serves the global energy market, with a focus on enabling customers to build, own, and operate power facilities that utilize its technology.
The NET Power Cycle is an oxy-combustion process that burns natural gas with pure oxygen, producing only carbon dioxide and water. This system is designed to generate electricity while capturing more than 97% of carbon dioxide emissions, which can then be sequestered underground or utilized in industrial processes. The technology provides 24/7 dispatchable baseload power, capable of rapid ramping to complement intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. A key milestone was achieved in 2018 when its La Porte, Texas demonstration plant became the world's first large-scale supercritical CO2 power plant. The facility successfully synchronized with the Texas grid in the fall of 2021, validating the technology's capability to deliver zero-emission electricity. In June 2023, Net Power began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol NPWR after completing a business combination with a special purpose acquisition company, raising over $675 million in gross proceeds to fund operations and accelerate deployment.
