Neoteris, Inc. was a developer of secure sockets layer (SSL) virtual private network (VPN) appliances that provided clientless, secure remote access to corporate network resources through a standard web browser. The company pioneered the Instant Virtual Extranet (IVE) platform, which enabled enterprises to extend access to applications and files to employees, partners, and customers without requiring the installation of VPN client software on user devices.
Founded in May 2000 by Sam Srinivas and Theron Tock, Neoteris established itself as a market leader in the SSL VPN product category. The company was based in Sunnyvale, California, and received backing from notable investors including Jim Clark, The Barksdale Group, New Enterprise Associates, and Battery Ventures. Its product line, the Neoteris Access Series, consisted of hardware appliances running on a hardened version of Red Hat Linux, designed to be deployed within a company's network, typically behind a firewall. These appliances acted as a secure proxy and portal, offering features like application-layer access, multi-unit clustering for high availability, and support for various enterprise applications, including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes.
The business model centered on selling these hardware/software hybrid appliances to enterprise customers across various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and government. By early 2003, Neoteris had secured 150 enterprise customers, 25% of which were Fortune 1000 or Global 500 companies. On October 6, 2003, NetScreen Technologies announced its definitive agreement to acquire Neoteris for approximately $265 million in a mix of stock and cash, a deal that was completed by November 2003. The acquisition aimed to combine NetScreen's IPsec-based security solutions with Neoteris's clientless SSL VPN technology to offer a broader range of secure access solutions.
