Nemoptic SA, founded in 2001, was a French company that operated as a designer and manufacturer of e-paper display technology. The firm specialized in bistable nematic liquid crystal displays, marketed under the trade name BiNem™. This technology, developed by Nemoptic between 1998 and 2010, enabled displays that could retain an image without consuming power, a characteristic feature of e-paper. The company's core innovation was the BiNem (Bistable Nematic) mode, which utilized two different anchoring conditions on substrates to create bistability, a method also known as "surface anchoring breaking". This allowed the displays to switch between two stable states, uniform and twisted, by applying different electrical pulses.
Nemoptic's business model focused on developing and commercializing its proprietary e-paper technology for various applications, including e-readers, retail signage, and mobile devices. The displays were noted for their high reflectance and good contrast. A key differentiator from competitors like E-Ink was the potential for faster refresh speeds, making the technology capable of displaying video content and supporting responsive touchscreen functionalities for tasks like handwriting. The company demonstrated several variants, including black and white displays, reflective color displays using RGBW filters, and even a transflective device. One of its notable developments was the world's first display combining a color OLED with a monochrome Bistable Nematic LCD, allowing users to switch between a vibrant color mode and a power-saving e-paper mode.
Throughout its operation, Nemoptic achieved several milestones, including the rollout of an A4-sized e-paper display in 2007, which was significantly larger than its previous models. The company secured $14 million in a Series D funding round on May 17, 2006, with investors including Innovation Capital, Ventech, Auriga Partners, and Alven. Despite its technological advancements and backing, there were reports that Nemoptic declared bankruptcy around October 2010. Prior to its closure, Nemoptic was considered a significant player in the e-paper market, competing with companies like E Ink.
