In 1983, NSR Murty established Nekkanti Sea Foods, beginning with a leased processing facility in Kakinada, India. The company started its operations in 1985, focusing on processing and exporting shrimp, a foundation that would support decades of growth. By 1989, the company had established its own processing facility in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant step in its expansion. The leadership eventually transitioned to the next generation, with Murty’s sons, Venkat Nekkanti and Mahesh Nekkanti, taking on key roles. They guided the company to become one of India's largest shrimp exporters, concentrating on delivering high-quality processed frozen shrimp to a global market. The company focused on both ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat shrimp products, with the majority of exports heading to the United States. In March 2018, Nekkanti Sea Foods filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) with the goal of raising significant capital for working requirements and expansion. However, due to unfavorable market conditions, particularly low shrimp prices, the company later decided to delay the IPO and bought back its pre-IPO shares. Despite this change in plans, the company continued its growth trajectory, investing in new facilities to increase its capacity for value-added products like breaded shrimp.
