Nej.cz is a significant telecommunications provider in the Czech Republic, forged through a history of strategic mergers and acquisitions. Its origins can be traced back to MATTES AD, spol. s r.o., a company founded in 1996 that became an early provider of internet services in the country. A key development occurred on November 1, 2009, when MATTES AD became part of RIO Media a.s., a move that expanded its service offerings. The Nej.cz brand as a distinct entity was established on October 1, 2018, when RIO Media became part of Nej.cz s.r.o.
The company's modern history is characterized by aggressive expansion under the ownership of the Kaprain Group, an investment firm founded by Czech billionaire Karel Pražák. Kaprain acquired a 100% stake in Nej.cz in 2015 and embarked on a consolidation strategy, acquiring numerous regional internet service providers to build a national competitor. This acquisition spree included notable companies like Smart Comp (which operates the Netbox brand and Kuki TV), Telly CE, and itself, transforming Nej.cz into the third-largest player in the Czech market. By 2023, having consolidated the market, Kaprain completed its investment cycle and agreed to sell Nej.cz to CETIN, part of the PPF Group, in a major transaction valued in the billions of crowns. The sale was approved by Czechia's antimonopoly office in late 2023, and as of 2024, Nej.cz is part of the O2 family, integrating its services with the larger operator.
Nej.cz operates as a subscription-based provider of internet, television, and voice services for both residential and business clients. Its business model focuses on delivering a bundled suite of telecommunication products. Revenue is generated from monthly fees for these services. For residential customers, the company offers high-speed optical and wireless 5G internet, IPTV services including the Kuki and Oneplay platforms (which combines O2 TV and Voyo), and mobile tariffs. Its infrastructure includes a substantial high-speed fiber-optic network available to half a million households. For its business-to-business (B2B) segment, Nej.cz provides dedicated internet solutions, server housing in three data centers, and streaming services.
