In 1988, Jose Perez and Jorge Mas Santos founded Neff Rental in Miami with a single store. The company focused on renting construction and industrial equipment, carving out a niche with a heavy concentration in earthmoving machinery. This focus allowed them to build significant expertise. The business began a period of aggressive growth in 1995, acquiring other rental companies and opening new locations. The journey through the public and private markets was complex. After an initial public offering in 1998, Neff was later taken private. The company navigated a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2010, emerging with new ownership. By 2014, Neff was ready to re-enter the public markets and filed for another IPO to raise capital and pay down debt. The final chapter for Neff as a standalone entity came in 2017. In a deal valued at approximately $1.3 billion, the company was acquired by United Rentals. This acquisition was a strategic move by United Rentals to expand its geographic footprint, particularly in the southern United States, and to absorb Neff's strong earthmoving fleet.
