Nectar Financial, also known as Nectar Digital Wealth AG, originated as Etops AG in 2010. The company was co-founded by Michael Appenzeller and Pius Stucki. Initially, its focus was on providing outsourcing solutions and digital investment management for wealth and asset managers, family offices, and banks. It developed technology for workflow automation and data analytics throughout the investment lifecycle.
A significant milestone was the creation of Fundbase.com, an online marketplace for alternative investments launched in 2013. In 2017, Julius Baer invested in the company. A split occurred in 2019, with Pius Stucki leading a management buyout of the outsourcing and data processing business, which reverted to the Etops name, while Michael Appenzeller continued to lead the digital investment arm as Nectar Digital Wealth. This allowed Nectar to sharpen its focus on developing tools based on artificial intelligence and machine learning for financial decision-making.
The company successfully exited its alternative asset subsidiary, Fundbase, in early 2021. This was followed by the spin-off of its advanced analytics business into an independent company, quantmate, in June 2022. Following these strategic divestitures, Nectar Digital Wealth has transitioned to operate as a group and holding company, managing its earn-out and equity participations from its previous ventures. The business model evolved from direct service provision to concentrating on predictive analytics and AI-based software products, aiming to make sophisticated investment tools, once exclusive to hedge funds, accessible to a broader audience.
