Nature for Water operates as a joint partnership facility, managed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Pegasys, a management consultancy. This initiative was established to assist local sponsors of watershed investment programs—such as utilities, government agencies, and NGOs—by providing comprehensive technical assistance to scale up Nature-based Solutions (NbS). The facility addresses the critical issue of water security, noting that nearly half of the world's drinking water sources are significantly degraded. Launched in 2022, the partnership aims to mainstream NbS within the water sector by leveraging the combined expertise of TNC's scientific and conservation track record and Pegasys's project management and advisory experience.
The business model is twofold, offering services through both fee-for-service partnerships and sponsored engagements funded by donors like the Dancing Tides Foundation and LGT Venture Philanthropy. Nature for Water provides a 'continuity of care' across the entire program development lifecycle, from pre-feasibility and stakeholder mapping to detailed design, business case evaluation, and execution support. The core service involves deploying a diverse international team with expertise in hydrology, GIS, ecology, finance, and governance to work hand-in-hand with local partners. This technical assistance includes biophysical modeling, developing sustainable funding strategies, and establishing program governance to ensure long-term impact.
The facility's services are designed to help clients build and operationalize watershed investment programs that protect and restore natural infrastructure like forests and wetlands. By doing so, they aim to improve water quality and quantity, enhance climate resilience, and generate co-benefits for biodiversity and local communities. Nature for Water has supported over 30 watershed programs in 20 countries, impacting hundreds of thousands of people. The long-term vision is to significantly improve the management of thousands of kilometers of rivers and vast areas of land and wetlands by 2030, supporting climate adaptation for over two million people.
