NanoPack Inc., now operating as Verdafresh, was established in 2004 by seasoned materials and packaging industry veterans Howard Kravitz and Fred Levitt. Positioned as a materials science company, it targets the packaging sector with a focus on developing cost-effective and environmentally conscious barrier materials. The firm operates primarily in the food packaging market, where extending shelf life through the protection of contents from oxygen and moisture is critical.

The company's business model centers on the development and sale of its proprietary coating technology and the barrier-coated films themselves. In November 2008, NanoPack Inc. secured over $1.1 million in a seed funding round from a syndicate of four regional angel investor groups: Robin Hood Ventures, Mid-Atlantic Angel Group, Delaware Crossing Investor Group, and LORE Associates. This capital was aimed at commercializing its initial products. More recently, under its new identity Verdafresh, the company announced a $2.5 million equity investment in September 2021, led by Rhapsody Venture Partners, to support the launch of its recyclable barrier films.

NanoPack's core product is a clear, water-based barrier coating technology designed to enhance standard packaging films like BOPP, PET, and NYLON. Its first commercial product line, marketed under the name NanoSeal™, is an FDA-compliant, patent-pending oxygen barrier coating. This coating is applied to traditional packaging films to significantly improve gas barrier properties, which protects food from oxidation and helps maintain aroma and freshness. This technology presents an alternative to conventional barrier methods, offering both economic and environmental benefits. Under the Verdafresh brand, the focus has shifted to promoting a line of fully recyclable, saran-free barrier films for flexible food packaging.
