N2 Broadband, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Duluth, Georgia, specialized in providing open-platform solutions for on-demand entertainment. The company's core business involved developing hardware and software that enabled cable TV operators and content providers to deploy video-on-demand (VOD) and other interactive services. Its clientele included major cable operators like Charter Communications and Time Warner Cable, as well as content distributors such as In Demand and Warner Bros. Technical Operations.
The company's flagship product was the N2 Network, a comprehensive on-demand solution that managed everything from content creation and distribution to back-office service management and operations support. A key feature of its offerings, like the OpenStream platform, was an open architecture design. This allowed cable operators to avoid being locked into proprietary systems, giving them the flexibility to use VOD servers, billing systems, and other components from various vendors. This approach was designed to streamline the deployment of on-demand services, reduce integration complexity, and automate the management of digital content.
N2 Broadband secured significant funding to fuel its operations, raising a total of $27 million. One notable funding round was a Series A in March 2002 for $10 million, led by Highland Capital Partners and with participation from AOL Time Warner Ventures. The executive team included CEO Jack Miller and President Reggie Bradford, with several members hailing from Scientific-Atlanta Inc. On February 4, 2005, N2 Broadband was acquired by TANDBERG Television for $118 million in a mix of cash and shares. Following the acquisition, the company was integrated into TANDBERG, and Reggie Bradford assumed the role of president for the new combined business unit headquartered in Atlanta.
