MyShoebox, registered as Shoebox App, was a cloud-based photo management and backup solution founded in 2012 by Steve Cosman and Kalu Kalu in Toronto, Canada. The company positioned itself as a platform for users to securely store and organize their entire photo collections from various devices in the cloud, without taking up local storage space.
The service provided users with unlimited cloud storage for photos, which were stored with encryption. A key feature was its cross-platform capability, with applications available for Android, iOS, and desktop computers. The platform automatically organized photos using metadata to allow browsing by timeline, location, camera, and other attributes. MyShoebox operated on a freemium business model. It offered free, unlimited backup for photos at a standard resolution (3264 pixels on the longest side), while a 'Pro' subscription was available for users who wished to back up their photos at original resolution.
The company secured $1.2 million in a single seed funding round on April 30, 2014, with investors including BDC and HIGHLINE. However, after several years of operation, MyShoebox announced it was shutting down. As of June 2019, the company confirmed its closure and provided a grace period for users to download their photos and videos. Tracxn lists the company as 'Deadpooled'.
