Mylo Speech Buddy provides a digital speech development system targeting the needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and speech delays. The company was established in the Philippines in July 2023 by Vincent Rocha, Enrico Aquino, and filmmaker Mark Meily. The inspiration behind the venture is deeply personal; Rocha, a travel industry veteran, was motivated by his own journey with his son, Noah, who was diagnosed with autism at two years old. This firsthand experience with the scarcity of accessible and affordable speech therapy services fueled the creation of the platform.
The core of Mylo's offering is a mobile application available on both iOS and Android devices. It utilizes a methodology known as Discrete Video Modeling, which presents learning in small, focused segments to aid comprehension for children with ASD. The curriculum, developed in collaboration with speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and developmental pediatricians, features vocabulary-based levels and video modules designed to be used for short, frequent sessions throughout the day. The platform is not intended to replace traditional therapy but to act as a supplemental tool for parents to continue developmental exercises at home, enhancing the work of medical professionals. Key features include gamified exercises, flashcards, pronunciation practice, and a progress tracking map for parents to monitor milestones.
Mylo operates on a subscription-based business model, offering monthly and annual plans with a free trial period. The service is priced to be more accessible than many alternatives, addressing a critical market need in the Philippines, where there are an estimated 1.2 million individuals with autism but a significant shortage of specialists. The company generates revenue through these subscriptions and has demonstrated early traction, reaching 60,000 downloads and expanding to 40 countries within its first year. As of June 2024, it was generating USD 9,000 in monthly recurring revenue. Looking ahead, Mylo plans for global expansion by localizing content for international markets, including Arabic and various Southeast Asian languages. The startup has also launched complementary initiatives like the 'Speak Clinic' teleconsultation platform and the 'Ausome World' digital series to further support the community.
