Myfox originated as a French company in 2005, founded by entrepreneur Jean Prunet. The firm was established in the Toulouse region with a focus on developing do-it-yourself (DIY) home security solutions. A key development in the company's early history was the creation of the IntelliTAG smart sensor, a device designed for proactive deterrence. This sensor attaches to doors and windows, analyzing vibrations to differentiate between normal daily occurrences and attempted break-ins, thereby alerting users before an intrusion occurs.
In 2009, Myfox launched what is cited as the first connected alarm system in Europe. That same year, Jean Prunet's son, Jean-Marc Prunet, who has a background in finance and is a graduate of ESSEC Business School, took over as CEO. Under his leadership, the company expanded its international presence significantly, entering markets in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain by 2014, and North America in 2015. A significant milestone occurred in October 2016 when Somfy, a global leader in building automation, acquired Myfox for approximately €12 million. This acquisition was a strategic move for Somfy to enhance its position in the connected home market and expand its product line, particularly in digital and video technologies. Following the acquisition, Jean-Marc Prunet continued to lead the company, which was rebranded as Somfy Protect.
The business operates in the smart home security market, providing systems directly to consumers through retail and online stores. Its business model focuses on the sale of hardware security kits, which clients can install themselves. The product ecosystem includes the Myfox Home Alarm and the Myfox Security Camera. The core system is built around a central hub, a 110-decibel siren, and the patented IntelliTAG vibration sensors. It also features a key fob for automatic system disarming via Bluetooth when a user approaches, eliminating the need for manual code entry. The security camera offers 720p HD streaming, night vision, and a distinctive motorized privacy shutter that can be closed when the user is home. The system is managed through a mobile application and can be integrated with other smart home ecosystems like IFTTT and Nest.
