MuteWatch AB was a Swedish technology company that specialized in wearable devices, launching a pioneering product in the wearable space in 2010. The company went out of business and entered liquidation on January 1, 2015.
The company was founded in Stockholm in 2008 by Mai-Li Hammargren, Oscar Ritzén Praglowski, and Gustav Hammargren. The initial idea came to Hammargren, who wanted a silent alarm that wouldn't wake her partner. This concept of a quiet, vibrating wristband evolved into the Mutewatch. The team was later joined by engineering student Johan Thelander. The concept gained significant media traction after first images were released in August 2010, and the resulting pre-orders helped fund the initial production.
The Mutewatch was a minimalist digital wristwatch featuring a concealed touch-sensitive LED display on a seamless rubber wristband. Users could tap the surface to reveal the time and swipe to access a clock, timer, and alarm functions. Its primary feature was the silent, vibrating alarm system, designed for personal, discreet notifications. The watch also included a motion sensor that adjusted the vibration intensity based on movement and an ambient light sensor to control display brightness. It was charged via an integrated USB connector. The product was aimed at tech-savvy, style-conscious consumers and sold in over 100 stores worldwide, gaining endorsements from figures like Steve Wozniak.
