MustBin Inc. developed a mobile application designed as a secure digital vault for an individual's essential information. The company was founded by Brian Shin, who conceived the idea after a friend lost all of his important documents during Hurricane Sandy. This event highlighted the need for a secure, cloud-based solution to protect vital papers from physical destruction. Launched in November 2013, the Boston-based firm aimed to provide users with a single, protected place for their most critical data.
The MustBin application allowed users to capture, organize, and share documents, photos, and other digital files. The platform organized information into pre-built categories or "bins," such as Wallet, Accounts and Passwords, and Health and Medical, to simplify data management. Beyond storage, the service included a secure messaging feature for privately sharing information with family or trusted advisors. Security was a core component of the product, which utilized what the company called Bincryption™ technology. This involved AES-256 encryption for every file and end-to-end encryption during cloud synchronization, supplemented by a mandatory PIN for app access.
The initial business model offered the application for free on iOS. In August 2014, the company's Chief Technology Officer, Satyender Mahajan, was appointed CEO to guide the next phase of growth. Under his leadership, MustBin gained significant user traction and won the MITX award for “Most Innovative Mobile App of 2014”. The company had secured $6 million in venture funding from backers including DAG Ventures and General Catalyst. In May 2017, LifeSite, a provider of secure digital vault solutions, announced it had acquired the assets of MustBin.
