Mundo Reader S.L., operating under the brand BQ, was a Spanish consumer electronics company that carved out a significant niche in the European market. The company's origins trace back to 2005, when a group of six telecommunications engineering students from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, including Alberto Méndez, Rodrigo del Prado, and Ravin Dhalani Gonzalez, started a venture. This early initiative evolved into the formal founding of Mundo Reader in 2009.
Initially, BQ focused on importing e-readers from Asia before transitioning to designing and producing its own branded devices in 2010. The company's product portfolio expanded strategically to include tablets, smartphones, 3D printers, and educational robotics kits. Revenue was primarily generated through the direct sale of these consumer electronics online and through retail partners across Europe. BQ distinguished itself by offering unlocked smartphones with competitive features, gaining substantial market share in Spain for e-readers and Android tablets.
Key milestones for BQ include launching the first Android One phone in Europe, the Aquaris A4.5, and pioneering the world's first mobile phone and tablet running the Ubuntu Phone operating system, the Aquaris E4.5 and Aquaris M10, respectively. This demonstrated a capacity for engaging with alternative operating systems beyond the mainstream duopoly. The company showed impressive financial growth, with revenues climbing from €3.8 million in 2010 to €202.5 million in 2014. In December 2014, BQ secured its first round of funding from Diana Capital, which valued the company at €200 million.
Despite its initial success, BQ faced increasing financial difficulties. In 2018, Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup acquired a 51% majority stake in the company, aiming to leverage BQ's engineering expertise for its own Vsmart smartphone brand. However, this acquisition did not reverse BQ's fortunes. The company ceased its consumer-facing business in 2019 and by November 2020, its website was no longer active. Mundo Reader S.L. eventually entered into bankruptcy proceedings in February 2021, marking the end of its operations.
