Mountain Hub operated as a socially connected, personalized information network designed for the outdoor adventure community. The company was founded in 2015 by a group of MIT graduate students, including Brint Markle and James Christian, who relocated to Park City, Utah, to be at the center of the outdoor industry. The inspiration for the company, originally known as Avatech, stemmed from a near-tragedy involving co-founder Markle, which led to the development of technology for sharing real-time snow safety and avalanche data.
The firm's core product was a multi-platform application that enabled users to discover, experience, and share their outdoor activities. Described as the "Waze of the outdoors," its primary function was to crowdsource real-time data on conditions, trip reports, and routes for activities like hiking, climbing, skiing, and mountain biking. This made outdoor activities safer and more accessible for its users. Key features included GPS tracking, the ability to geotag photos, and an interactive 3D Flyover map, created in partnership with Doarama, which offered a detailed virtual tour of a user's path. The app was free for consumers, a model supported through partnerships with brands such as Backcountry.com, Black Diamond, and Patagonia. Mountain Hub also offered a targeted platform for these brand partners, creating a holistic digital experience.
Garnering significant recognition, the company received accolades from Popular Science and was named a top place to work by Outside Magazine in 2016. After raising funds from investors including KarpReilly, Kickstart Seed Fund, and Telluride Venture Fund, Mountain Hub was acquired by Swiss apparel and gear company Mammut in July 2018. The acquisition was a strategic move by Mammut to enhance its digital footprint and build a stronger connection with its consumer base by integrating Mountain Hub's community and data-sharing capabilities.
