Mountain Culture Beer Co. is a craft brewery founded in 2019 by husband-and-wife duo DJ and Harriet McCready in Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia. DJ McCready, an American-born brewer with experience at renowned US craft brewery Oskar Blues and as the founding head brewer at Modus Operandi in Sydney, provides the technical brewing expertise. Harriet McCready, with a background as a former deputy editor for Dolly and Cosmopolitan magazines, manages the creative direction, branding, and e-commerce.
The company began as the first brewpub in the Blue Mountains, located in a renovated 1912 building that formerly housed a local newspaper and later a video store. The initial business plan focused on serving locals and tourists. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic just months after opening forced a rapid pivot from a hospitality venue to a direct-to-consumer e-commerce model. Within a week, they shifted from kegs to cans and launched a website, which led to staggering growth and a national customer base. This pivot increased production capability from 60,000 litres per year to 500,000 by the end of 2020.
To meet escalating demand, Mountain Culture opened a major production facility in Emu Plains in 2021, equipped with a state-of-the-art 25-hectolitre brewhouse and canning line, significantly increasing its capacity. The business model involves direct-to-consumer sales through their website and brewpubs, as well as national distribution through major retailers like Dan Murphy's, Liquorland, and over 700 independent stores. The company operates brewpubs and taprooms in Katoomba, Emu Plains, Redfern, Melbourne, and Hobart. The company secured its first external investment from Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins in 2024.
Mountain Culture's product strategy revolves around a core range of beers, including the flagship Status Quo Pale Ale, complemented by a constant stream of limited-edition releases, with over 250 produced to date. This approach of continuous experimentation allows them to refine techniques and push creative boundaries. The brewery has achieved significant recognition, with its Status Quo Pale Ale winning #1 in the GABS Hottest 100 Australian Craft Beers for three consecutive years (2023-2025).
