Motion AI was a technology company that developed a visual chatbot builder, allowing users to create, train, and deploy chatbots without needing programming skills. Founded in 2015 by David Nelson, the company was headquartered in Naperville, Illinois. Nelson, a self-taught engineer and repeat founder, previously created the music streaming application Muziic at age 15 and later, the social media software company FanRx.
The company's platform enabled the creation of bots for various channels, including websites, SMS, Facebook Messenger, and Slack. These bots could handle tasks such as booking meetings, qualifying leads, and running customer service chats. Motion AI launched on Product Hunt in November 2015 and quickly gained traction, raising a $700,000 seed round from investors including Crush Ventures and Hyde Park Angels.
In September 2017, HubSpot acquired Motion AI for an undisclosed amount. Prior to the acquisition, HubSpot was already a customer, integrating Motion AI's technology with its Free CRM to personalize customer journeys and automate lead qualification. Following the acquisition, the entire Motion AI team, including CEO David Nelson, joined HubSpot to incorporate the technology into the core HubSpot platform, with the goal of helping businesses automate tasks and scale conversations. At the time of the acquisition, over 80,000 bots had been built on the platform, facilitating more than 40 million messages.
