Morpheus Data operates as a hybrid cloud management and container orchestration platform, recently acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in a transaction valued at approximately $150 million which closed in August 2024. The company was founded in 2010 by Brian Wheeler and originated within Bertram Capital, a private equity firm. The platform was initially developed by Bertram's internal technology team, Bertram Labs, to address their own need for an agnostic application automation platform to support a diverse portfolio of companies. After five years of internal use and refinement, the co-founders spun out Morpheus Data as an independent, self-funded entity in 2015.

The core of Morpheus Data's business is its software platform designed to unify the management of multi-cloud and hybrid IT environments. It serves a diverse client base, from large enterprises and Fortune 1000 companies to managed service providers (MSPs). The business model is channel-focused, with over 95% of its revenue generated through partnerships. The platform is offered as standalone software and is also being integrated into the HPE GreenLake cloud, HPE's private cloud portfolio, and underpins solutions like HPE VM Essentials. This dual offering allows it to support existing customers and expand its reach through HPE's ecosystem.

The platform provides a single control plane for enterprises to manage complex IT estates, which may include on-premise data centers, private clouds, public clouds like AWS and Azure, and container platforms like Kubernetes. Key functionalities include self-service provisioning for developers, enabling them to quickly deploy bare-metal servers, virtual machines (VMs), and multi-tier applications without manual IT intervention. It automates the complete application lifecycle, covering provisioning, backup, logging, monitoring, and access control. A significant component of the offering is its Financial Operations (FinOps) capabilities, which provide detailed visibility into cloud spending, budget setting, and cost optimization recommendations across various environments. By integrating with tools customers already use, such as Terraform and ServiceNow, Morpheus aims to simplify operations, eliminate tool sprawl, and bridge process gaps between development, security, and finance teams.
