Montage Healthcare Solutions was a specialized analytics company founded in Philadelphia in 2010 by Dr. William Boonn and Dr. Woojin Kim. The founders, both practicing radiologists and imaging informatics fellows from the University of Maryland Medical Center, leveraged their deep clinical expertise to address a critical need within their field. Dr. Kim's early forays into programming to solve departmental workflow inefficiencies at the University of Pennsylvania sparked the initial concept, leading to a collaboration with Dr. Boonn, who served as President & CEO. Their direct experience in radiology provided the foundation for the company's core product.
The company developed MONTAGE Search and Analytics, a tool designed specifically for radiology departments within hospitals, imaging centers, and private practices. The platform functioned by mining and analyzing unstructured data found in Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Utilizing natural language processing (NLP), the software could extract valuable clinical and operational insights from radiologists' reports. This enabled healthcare providers to enhance clinical decision support, improve the quality of reports, conduct research more efficiently by quickly identifying patient cohorts, and measure departmental performance. For instance, radiologists could launch the tool directly from their reporting workflow to access historical reports for a patient, providing immediate clinical context.
Montage Healthcare Solutions operated on a B2B model, selling its software to healthcare organizations. A key component of its go-to-market strategy was a strategic partnership with Nuance Communications. Beginning in late 2011, this collaboration evolved into an exclusive reseller agreement, allowing Nuance to sell Montage's technology to its large, established base of radiology customers who used its PowerScribe 360|Reporting platform. This integration was a significant growth driver for the company. Following a seed funding round of $1 million in March 2012, Montage continued to expand its client base. The company's journey culminated in its acquisition by Nuance Communications on August 3, 2016, integrating its analytics capabilities directly into Nuance's portfolio. Post-acquisition, the solution was known as mPower clinical analytics.
