Moka operates as a commerce enablement platform, providing an integrated suite of tools for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) primarily in Indonesia. The company was established in 2014 by co-founders Haryanto Tanjo and Grady Laksmono. The idea for the venture originated from discussions between the two while they were in the United States, recognizing the technological gap in how Indonesian SMEs managed their operations. Tanjo, serving as CEO, brought a background in industrial engineering, operations research, and management consulting from firms like McKinsey & Company. Laksmono, the CTO, contributed his expertise as a software engineer, with experience at tech companies including Yahoo! and Zynga.
The core of Moka's offering is a cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) system that runs on mobile devices. This system is designed to streamline business operations by taking over administrative tasks such as compiling sales reports and managing inventory. The platform's business model is rooted in a monthly subscription fee. Beyond the POS, the company has expanded its services to create a comprehensive business ecosystem. This includes functionalities for payment acceptance, inventory management, customer relationship management (CRM), loyalty programs, accounting, ingredient procurement, and access to business loans. Moka serves a diverse client base across various sectors including food and beverage, retail, and services. By 2020, the company was serving approximately 40,000 merchants in over 200 cities across Indonesia.
A significant milestone in Moka's history was its acquisition by the Indonesian tech giant Gojek in April 2020, for a reported sum of around $120-$130 million. Following the acquisition, Moka was integrated into Gojek's merchant ecosystem, GoBiz, while continuing to operate as a distinct entity. This move was strategic for Gojek, aiming to bolster its offerings for food merchants and strengthen its position in the digital payments sector by expanding its merchant network. For Moka, the integration provided access to Gojek's extensive network of over 500,000 merchant partners, creating substantial growth opportunities. The platform has since evolved to support omnichannel sales, connecting online and offline orders through integrations with services like GoFood and by enabling merchants to create their own online storefronts via GoStore.
