Moderato is a Paris-based startup, founded in 2020 by Fabien Marchand-Cassagne and Sebastien Thomas, that produces a range of premium non-alcoholic French wines. The project was initiated in the spring of 2020, with the company officially created in September 2020 and the first low-ABV cuvée launched in January 2021. The founders, both wine enthusiasts, were inspired by the quality advancements in the non-alcoholic beer market and aimed to create a high-quality wine alternative for those looking to reduce alcohol consumption without sacrificing taste. Marchand-Cassagne brings experience in sustainable brand development, while Thomas comes from a family of Cognac producers and winemakers.
The company produces its wines in the Gers region of southwest France, working in close partnership with local winegrowers to select high-quality wines with specific aromatic profiles suitable for dealcoholization. Moderato utilizes a low-temperature vacuum distillation process to gently remove the alcohol, a method chosen to best preserve the original structure and flavors of the wine. The business sells its products directly to consumers through its website and has expanded its distribution to other countries in Europe, Canada, the Middle East, and Asia. The company has successfully raised $3.3 million in funding to support its growth.
Moderato's product line includes still red, white, and rosé wines, as well as sparkling varieties, made from traditional French grape varieties such as Merlot, Tannat, Sauvignon, and Colombard. The brand has gained recognition and awards for its products, including silver medals at the Concours de Lyon and the IWSC for its Cuvée Révolutionnaire wines.
