Mission Clean Energy
Decarbonizing the grid, one energy project at a time.
Mission Clean Energy operates as a developer of utility-scale renewable energy and energy storage projects, positioning itself within the rapidly expanding clean energy sector in the United States. Founded in 2022 by seasoned professionals in the clean energy field, the company is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The firm's business model centers on the complete lifecycle management of complex energy projects, from initial concept and site acquisition through to completion. It serves a diverse client base that includes utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, and large corporate customers, providing them with customized, grid-scale energy solutions.
The leadership team, including CEO Max Bakker and COO Valentina Cabrera, brings extensive experience to the company. Before Mission Clean Energy, Bakker founded Atlas Renewable Power, a consulting firm where he led the origination and development of over 4 gigawatts of utility-scale solar and battery projects. His background also includes roles in project development and utility system sales at First Solar and as an early employee at NextLight Renewable Power. Cabrera, who previously worked as an Environmental Scientist at the EPA, collaborated with Bakker at Atlas, leading the company’s expansion and managing real estate agreements for over 100 projects. This collective experience has resulted in the successful development of over 4 gigawatts of contracted and operational energy projects by the leadership team in their prior roles.
Mission Clean Energy develops both solar and standalone battery energy storage projects. The company has a significant project pipeline, with over 11 GW under development across more than a dozen states, including Arizona, California, Texas, and New York. A key aspect of its strategy involves forming strategic partnerships. A notable collaboration is with Ørsted, a global clean energy leader, to develop four standalone battery energy storage systems in the Midwest, totaling 1 GW. This partnership was strengthened by a $55 million strategic investment from Ørsted in March 2025 to expand Mission's project pipeline. The company is also backed by Wafra Inc., an alternative asset manager, which was its principal investor following an acquisition on October 18, 2022. Despite these investments and its acquisition, Mission Clean Energy continues to operate as an independent business led by its current management team.
