MimoOn GmbH was a German technology company founded in 2006, positioning itself as a key provider of software-defined Long-Term Evolution (LTE) solutions. The company specialized in developing and licensing intellectual property for wireless communication standards, targeting equipment vendors and network operators. Its business model centered on creating advanced software for the burgeoning small cell market, which enhances mobile network coverage and capacity in specific, targeted areas.
The company's product portfolio was comprehensive, featuring protocol stacks for both small cells (mi!SmallCellPHY and mi!SmallCellSTACK) and terminals (mi!MobilePHY and mi!MobileSTACK). Additionally, MimoOn developed a sophisticated scheduler for small cells, known as mi!SmallCellSPECTRUM, and software to support self-organizing networks (mi!SmallCellSON), which automates the configuration and optimization of network elements. This suite of products provided the essential software components needed to build and operate 4G LTE networks.
Over its history, MimoOn secured approximately $1.37 million in funding across two main rounds. The initial seed funding of $1.2 million occurred on October 11, 2006, from investors HTGF and EnjoyVenture. This was followed by a Series B round on September 3, 2013, with participation from German Startups Group and Smalt Capital. In a strategic move to expand its capabilities, UK-based CommAgility, a developer of embedded signal processing and RF modules, acquired MimoOn on March 1, 2015. This acquisition allowed CommAgility to integrate MimoOn's LTE software expertise with its own hardware, creating a more complete solution for the 4G and 5G mobile networking market. CommAgility itself was later acquired by Wireless Telecom Group in 2017 and subsequently by E-Space in 2022.
