Mi3 Security, established in 2013 and also known as MetaIntell, Inc., specialized in mobile risk management technologies before its acquisition. The company was founded by Kevin Mullenex, who served as its CEO. His background includes an MBA in Marketing and Finance, as well as MSEE and BSEE degrees in Electrical Engineering, alongside various leadership roles in business development and sales at tech companies like Solid Information Technology (acquired by IBM) and Cyveillance (acquired by QinetiQ North America).
The firm developed a cloud-based intelligence platform designed to provide enterprises with actionable data to identify and predict security and privacy risks in mobile applications on both iOS and Android platforms. The core of its business was to offer forensic-level security data and visibility into mobile app behaviors, enabling clients to prevent data breaches before they happened. Mi3 Security's RECON Platform utilized big data techniques to automate the analysis of mobile apps, a process that was previously manual and time-consuming. This allowed for rapid, contextual analysis across the application ecosystem.
A key feature was the ability to integrate security assessments into the app development lifecycle, allowing developers to identify risks in every build, which reduced the cost and time for updates. The business model focused on providing this advanced mobile application analysis to enterprise customers. The company was angel-backed, having raised a total of $275K over several funding rounds, including a seed round of $225K in October 2014. After a strong OEM partnership, Mi3 Security was acquired by Zimperium, a mobile device security company, on June 13, 2018, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition aimed to integrate Mi3's RECON platform into Zimperium's z3A solution to offer deeper application security options.
