Founded in 2012 by Joel Torkelsson and Magnus Luttkens in Gothenburg, Sweden, Metry emerged from the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship with a mission to address energy inefficiency in the real estate sector. The founders identified a critical bottleneck for property owners: the lack of accessible and structured energy data needed to make informed decisions about energy-saving investments. Initially targeting energy companies, they pivoted to the real estate industry after realizing property owners had a stronger incentive for energy monitoring.
Metry operates as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business, providing a cloud-based platform that automates the collection, structuring, and validation of energy and environmental data. The company's service aggregates data from a vast and fragmented landscape of sources, including over 10,000 utility providers, various sub-meters, and smart meters, without requiring new hardware installations. Revenue is generated by offering this aggregated, quality-assured data to clients such as property owners, property managers, and energy service providers. The platform makes the data available through an API, allowing customers to integrate it into their own energy management tools, Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), or sustainability reporting frameworks like GRESB, SFDR, and CSRD.
A significant milestone occurred in January 2024 when Metry was acquired by EVORA Global, a provider of tech-enabled sustainability solutions for the real asset industry. This strategic merger aims to enhance data automation and quality for real estate and infrastructure investors, combining Metry's data collection capabilities with EVORA's expertise in sustainability strategy and carbon accounting. As part of the acquisition, the founders and key investors reinvested in the new joint entity. Co-founder Magnus Hornef (previously Luttkens) transitioned from CEO of Metry to Chief Data Officer on EVORA Global's Executive Committee, signaling a deeper integration of data strategy into the parent company's core offerings.
