In 1980, Dr. Sushil Shah started a single diagnostic laboratory in Mumbai, India. This was the humble beginning of what would become Metropolis Healthcare. For years, it operated as a doctor-led practice. The major shift happened in 2001 when his daughter, Ameera Shah, who had returned to India after studying finance in the U.S., joined the business. Ameera Shah brought a business and systems-oriented mindset to her father's scientific expertise. This father-daughter duo transformed the single lab into a scalable enterprise. They began partnering with regional diagnostic chains, expanding their footprint across the country. This strategy allowed them to grow from one lab to a network of labs and collection centers. The company also expanded its international presence, starting with Sri Lanka in 2005. The company's growth attracted private equity investors, including Warburg Pincus in 2010. A pivotal moment in the company's journey was its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in April 2019. The IPO saw both the promoter, Dr. Sushil Shah, and an investor selling shares. This event marked a new chapter for the company, solidifying its position as a leading diagnostics chain in India and other emerging markets.
