MetroDeal was an e-commerce, group-buying platform that provided customers with discounted vouchers for a wide array of products and services. The company's offerings spanned various categories, including dining, travel, health and beauty services, and consumer goods. The business model operated by securing deals with merchant partners and offering them to a large user base, making money through the sale of these discounted vouchers online.
The company was founded in 2011 by Ralph Wunsch, an Austrian-born entrepreneur with a background from Harvard University. Wunsch had prior e-commerce experience from his teenage years before launching MetroDeal, which quickly found its footing in the market. Within its first year, the platform became a leading e-commerce website in the Philippines. This success led to its acquisition by the Japanese outsourcing and e-commerce services firm, Transcosmos, on June 30, 2015, for a reported $30 million. Following the acquisition, MetroDeal operated as a subsidiary and continued to expand its services.
After 13 years of operation, MetroDeal announced it would cease the sale of new deals on May 31, 2024. The company stated that while new sales would stop, already purchased vouchers could be redeemed until their expiration dates, and customer support would remain available through the end of 2024.
