The story of Metco Landscape begins not in a pristine garden, but with the stock market crash of the late 1980s. Mark Tomko, finding himself out of work as a stockbroker, started mowing lawns to make a living. In 1987, with a few lawnmowers, he founded Metco with a simple mission: to build relationships through quality landscaping. For over a decade, the company grew by learning as it went. A turning point came in 2001 when Tomko hired a business consultant, which led to implementing structured systems and processes. This organization fueled rapid revenue growth. The business provided comprehensive services including commercial landscape maintenance, design, installation, and snow removal across Colorado's Front Range. By 2014, Metco was recognized as one of the top 100 landscape companies in the nation. The company's success attracted investors, and in 2018, it received an investment from private equity firm Westhook Capital to support its next phase of growth, including strategic acquisitions. This partnership proved fruitful, and in late 2021, Metco was acquired by Atar Capital, a global private investment firm. This acquisition marked a significant milestone, positioning the company, formerly the largest privately owned landscape business in Colorado, for continued expansion under new ownership.
