Menguin is an e-commerce company that provides online rental services for men's formal wear, including suits and tuxedos. The company primarily targets clients for weddings, proms, and other formal events across the United States. The business model is centered on convenience, allowing customers to handle the entire rental process online, which saves them the time of visiting a physical store multiple times. Revenue is generated through the rental fees for its formal wear, which includes suits, tuxedos, shirts, shoes, and a wide array of accessories.
The company was co-founded by Justin Delaney, Bogdan Constantin, and Kurt Varner. The idea originated while the founders were at the Kelley School of Business, where two of them, frustrated by their own negative experiences renting tuxedos for weddings, identified a gap in the market. They launched Menguin in 2011, initially starting in Atlanta before relocating to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to be closer to e-commerce mentorship. The service was designed to streamline the fitting and ordering process. Customers answer questions about their body profile (height, weight, jean size, etc.), and a proprietary algorithm determines the correct sizes. The garments are then shipped directly to the customer's door 10-14 days before the event, with free replacements sent overnight if there are any fit issues.
Menguin experienced rapid growth, reporting an 800% compound annual growth rate for three consecutive years. This success attracted significant attention, leading to its acquisition in September 2017 by Generation Tux, a competitor founded by Men's Wearhouse founder George Zimmer. The acquisition was valued at $25 million. Following the acquisition, Menguin and Generation Tux continued to operate as separate brands under a holding company, Gen Tux, Inc., with the goal of combining Menguin's digital marketing prowess with Generation Tux's operational infrastructure. Co-founder Justin Delaney became president of both companies, and the leadership team relocated to Louisville, Kentucky.
