In 1990, Ricardo Claro Valdés launched Red Televisiva Megavisión, the first private television network in Chile, breaking the state's broadcasting monopoly. The early playbook involved a partnership with Mexico's Televisa to bring popular telenovelas to the Chilean audience, quickly capturing viewership. The first major shift came in 2012 when the Bethia group, a prominent Chilean holding company led by the Solari family, acquired 100% of the channel, which was by then known as Mega. This acquisition marked a new era of expansion. Under Bethia's ownership, the company diversified into radio, acquiring several stations and building a multiplatform media house. A significant strategic move occurred in 2016 when Discovery Communications purchased a 27.5% stake. This partnership aimed to boost content production and push Mega onto the international stage. The company officially became Megamedia in 2019, consolidating its television and radio assets. However, the alliance with Discovery was not permanent. In late 2023, Bethia reacquired Discovery's stake, returning to full ownership and signaling a renewed focus on its own strategic path, including content distribution and digital growth.
