What started as a Connecticut-based managed care company in 1989, MedSpan, Inc. offered PPO and HMO products to the commercial market and Medicare recipients. It operated as a provider-sponsored health plan, providing services like pharmacy networks and ancillary facilities. The company attracted venture capital, raising over $23 million from investors including Boston Capital Ventures and Conning. In March 2002, this chapter of MedSpan's story concluded when it was acquired by Oxford Health Plans for $18 million. However, the brand name found a new purpose. In 1996, Robert Kaminsky launched MedSpan Research, a separate entity focused on market research for the healthcare industry. With a mission to improve the adoption of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, this new MedSpan carved out a niche in the managed markets sector. Drawing on his experience at companies like Baxter Healthcare and KPMG Consulting, Kaminsky built a firm dedicated to helping manufacturers navigate the complex world of payers and health systems. Today, MedSpan Research continues to operate, providing strategic insights to a global client base.
