In 1979, two neonatologists, Dr. Roger Medel and Dr. Gregory Melnick, identified a critical inefficiency in how hospitals managed neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). They founded South Florida Neonatology Associates with a new playbook: outsource the entire physician staffing and management of these specialized units to their group. This allowed doctors to focus on clinical care while the central organization handled the business administration. The model was a win-win, providing hospitals with cost containment and physicians with administrative support. The company, renamed Pediatrix Medical Group, grew steadily. A major turning point came in September 1995 with its initial public offering (IPO), which raised $88 million to fuel a national acquisition strategy. Pediatrix began buying up neonatology practices across the country, consolidating a fragmented market. By 1998, it expanded its service line by forming Obstetrix to manage high-risk pregnancies, creating a continuum of care from mother to baby. To reflect its diversification into areas like anesthesiology, the company became Mednax, Inc. in the late 2000s. However, after years of operating under the holding company structure and expanding into various services, the company underwent a strategic transformation. In 2022, it divested non-core assets and returned to its roots, rebranding the entire corporation back to Pediatrix Medical Group to refocus on its core, high-acuity services for maternal-fetal medicine and pediatrics.
