Meddy was a doctor booking platform that operated primarily in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, with a strong presence in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Founded in 2015 by Haris Aghadi and Abdulla AlKhenji, the company originated as a university project at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. Aghadi and AlKhenji, who both studied Information Systems, identified a gap in the market where many medical clinics lacked a sophisticated online presence, relying instead on traditional advertising and word-of-mouth referrals.
The platform provided a two-sided marketplace. For patients, it offered a free-to-use web and mobile application to find and book appointments with doctors based on criteria like specialization, location, insurance coverage, and patient reviews. This aimed to help patients, particularly the large expatriate population in the region, make more informed healthcare decisions. For healthcare providers, Meddy offered a subscription-based clinic management software. This B2B solution included tools for managing appointment calendars, billing, and customer relationship management (CRM), while also providing a marketing channel for clinics to enhance their online visibility and attract new patients.
The company achieved several key milestones, including being the first Qatari startup funded by the Silicon Valley accelerator 500 Startups and raising a Series A round. By November 2021, Meddy had facilitated over 200,000 doctor appointments and helped providers generate approximately $130 million in billings. In a significant strategic move in November 2021, Meddy was acquired by Helium Health, a Nigeria-based health-tech company, for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition was part of Helium Health's expansion into the GCC. Following the acquisition, Meddy was rebranded as Helium Doc, and its leadership, including CEO Haris Aghadi and COO Abed Alkarim Khattab, joined the Helium Health leadership team to spearhead regional strategy.
