MedAngel

MedAngel, founded in 2015 by Amin Zayani, was a digital health company that operated from Nijmegen, Netherlands. The inspiration for the company came from Zayani's personal experience as a type 1 diabetic when his own insulin supply was accidentally frozen in his refrigerator. A solar energy engineer by training and hardware expert, Zayani identified a critical gap in at-home medication management for temperature-sensitive drugs and set out to create a solution. The company participated in the Rockstart Health accelerator program in 2016 and secured a Series A funding round in July 2018, with investors including Holland Capital and Oost NL. MedAngel appears to have ceased operations as of late 2024.

The company's core business revolved around helping patients manage chronic conditions by ensuring their medications remained effective. Its target clients were individuals who depend on temperature-sensitive medications, such as those with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. The business model was direct-to-consumer, selling a physical device paired with a free mobile application.

MedAngel's flagship product was the MedAngel ONE, a system comprising a waterproof, Bluetooth-enabled sensor and a companion smartphone app. Users would place the small, oval-shaped sensor with their medications—whether in a refrigerator, travel bag, or cooling wallet. The sensor continuously monitored the temperature and transmitted the data to the app, which was available for both iOS and Android. The app featured a database of hundreds of approved medications, each with its specific safe temperature range. If the temperature approached or exceeded these critical limits, the user would receive an alert on their smartphone, preventing the potential loss of medication efficacy. The app also provided a 30-day history of temperature readings, offering users a comprehensive overview of their storage conditions.
