In 1969, as the world looked to the Moon, John S. MacDonald and Vern Dettwiler started a company in a Vancouver basement. This company, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, or MDA, would become a cornerstone of Canada's space legacy. Their work began by providing innovative technology solutions, and soon they were reaching for the stars. The company's defining moment came with the development of the Canadarm for the Space Shuttle program, which first flew in 1981. This robotic arm became a symbol of Canadian technological skill. The journey, however, was complex. MDA went through several ownership changes, including being acquired by American company Orbital Sciences Corporation in 1995 and later becoming part of Maxar Technologies, which moved its headquarters to the U.S. A pivotal chapter unfolded in 2020 when a consortium of Canadian investors, Northern Private Capital, acquired MDA's assets from Maxar for over $700 million, bringing the company back under Canadian ownership. This repatriation set the stage for a new era. The following year, in April 2021, MDA went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange, securing approximately $400 million in its initial public offering. Today, MDA continues to build on its heritage. The company is developing Canadarm3, a sophisticated, AI-enabled robotics system for the international Lunar Gateway space station. This new chapter ensures that a company born in a basement will continue to be a key player in humanity's exploration of space.
