Maya is a mobile application designed as a personal health assistant for women. Developed by the Bengaluru-based company Plackal Tech, the app allows users to track menstrual cycles, monitor related symptoms, set health reminders, and track pregnancy. It utilizes user-input data on moods, physical symptoms, weight, and blood flow to provide personalized health insights and predict fertility and ovulation windows. The platform also fosters a community where users can discuss health topics with peers and experts.
The company was founded in 2012 by John Paul and Jane Mary John. The idea for the app, originally named LoveCycles, was inspired by the personal experience of a friend of the founder's wife, who faced complications from an unplanned pregnancy. This highlighted the need for accessible tools for women to monitor their health. In 2016, Plackal Tech raised ₹5 crore from Prime Venture Partners and rebranded from LoveCycles to Maya. By January 2019, the women-only community platform SHEROES acquired Maya in an all-stock deal to enhance its health offerings.
Maya operates on a freemium model. The core tracking features are free, supported by non-intrusive ads, while an optional premium subscription unlocks advanced features. The app has achieved over 10 million downloads and is available in 14 languages across 192 countries. Maya has received several accolades, including being named the Facebook FbStart App of the Year for the Asia Pacific region in 2017.
