Established in 1943, Maxwell State Bank is a state-chartered commercial bank located in Maxwell, Iowa. For decades, it has operated as a traditional community-focused institution, providing personal and business banking, including checking, savings, and various loan types like personal, home, and auto loans. The bank is supervised by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
A significant transformation began in 2021 when the bank was acquired by FinTech entrepreneur Ronald Ingram, who became Executive Chairman. This marked a new strategic direction, aiming to merge traditional community banking with modern financial technology. In July 2025, Brad Hanson, former President and CEO of the $7.5 billion asset Pathward Financial (MetaBank), was appointed as President and CEO of Maxwell State Bank to lead this evolution.
Under new leadership, the bank has outlined a three-pillar revenue strategy. 'MaxCommunity' focuses on high-touch, full-service banking for Maxwell and surrounding areas like Ankeny, Ames, and Des Moines, with expertise in SBA and agricultural lending. 'MaxMobile' introduces a mobile-first platform featuring military-grade security and services typically associated with larger banks, such as SWIFT wires and digital asset capabilities. The third pillar, 'MaxMerchants', provides secure merchant processing services. This strategic shift involves partnerships with technology firms like Baanx, a London-based fintech specialist in which the bank acquired a stake, and DCI, a core processing and digital banking solutions developer, to enhance cybersecurity, digital safekeeping, and overall technology infrastructure.
