The story begins not with a startup, but with a mission. The Sisters of Mercy established the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in 1861 to provide care to all. To fund this mission, they later opened a private nursing home for paying patients. This laid the groundwork for the modern Mater Private Hospital, which officially opened in Dublin in May 1986. A key founder was Sister Gemma Byrne, who became its first chief executive and was determined to create a high-tech hospital at the forefront of Irish healthcare. The playbook was clear: invest in top consultants and advanced specialties like cardiac surgery and oncology. This strategy established the hospital's reputation for high-quality care. The network began to scale, opening Mater Private Cork in 2012, followed by day hospitals and outreach clinics in subsequent years. This expansion brought specialized services closer to patients across the country. A significant turning point came in 2018 when the entire Mater Private group was acquired by the French firm InfraVia Capital Partners for a figure reported to be around €500 million. This acquisition marked a new chapter, moving ownership from a US fund and providing new capital for growth. Under new ownership, the focus shifted to further expansion, developing more day hospitals, and accelerating the hospital's digital transformation. Today, the Mater Private Network operates as a leading private hospital group in Ireland.
