Markafoni was a prominent Turkish e-commerce company that operated as an online fashion and lifestyle marketplace. The company was founded in 2008 by Sina Afra, Tolga Tatari, and Ahmet Emre Sarı. The founding team brought a blend of corporate and entrepreneurial experience; Sina Afra, for instance, had a background at KPMG and eBay, which provided a strong foundation in strategy and e-commerce operations. This expertise was instrumental in launching Markafoni, which introduced the private shopping club model to the Turkish market.
The business operated on a flash-sale model, offering discounted products from a wide range of categories including apparel, accessories, cosmetics, and home goods for a limited time. This model catered to consumers seeking branded products at reduced prices. Markafoni quickly grew to become one of the largest online fashion companies in Turkey. A significant milestone was its international expansion, establishing operations in countries like Australia, Greece, Poland, and Ukraine, making it one of the first Turkish internet companies to go global.
The company's trajectory attracted major international interest, culminating in a majority stake acquisition by the South African media and internet conglomerate Naspers in 2011, a deal noted as one of the largest in the Turkish internet sector at the time. By 2014, Naspers acquired the remaining shares, taking full ownership of the company. Following the complete acquisition, founder and CEO Sina Afra departed to pursue new ventures. Despite its initial success and strong market position, Markafoni faced challenges in scaling its operations sustainably. Coupled with a difficult economic environment in Turkey, the company struggled to maintain profitability. In June 2017, Naspers announced the closure of Markafoni, ceasing all operations by the end of the month.
