Maergo, formerly operating as X Delivery, was a logistics company founded in 2019 and headquartered in Austin, Texas. The company positioned itself as a technology-driven national parcel carrier, serving direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands and retailers by offering expedited 1-3 day shipping at prices comparable to slower ground services. Chris Guggenheim founded the company, and in November 2021, Mark Lavelle, a seasoned tech executive, was appointed CEO, with Guggenheim transitioning to executive chairman. Lavelle co-founded Bill Me Later, which was acquired by PayPal, and was the CEO of Magento, leading it to a $1.7 billion sale to Adobe in 2018.
The company's business model was asset-light, utilizing artificial intelligence to manage a network of specialized ground, air, sorting, and last-mile providers. This approach was designed to optimize the first, middle, and last-mile operations. A key component of its strategy involved using the empty cargo space on passenger aircraft for the middle-mile journey, which allowed for faster transit times compared to the traditional hub-and-spoke models of incumbent carriers. Maergo served high-growth brands and retailers, counting Saks Fifth Avenue, Allbirds, Chubbies, and Buck Mason among its clients. Revenue was generated by providing end-to-end parcel delivery services, with a simplified pricing structure that often bundled costs like fuel surcharges and residential fees.
In December 2022, the company announced it had raised $20 million in a seed funding round and officially rebranded from X Delivery to Maergo. The funding was led by Deep Lake Capital and included participation from RyderVentures, the venture capital arm of Ryder System, Inc. At that time, Maergo had delivered over 8 million shipments. Despite its initial growth, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when demand for shipping capacity was high, the company faced significant challenges. Increased price competition from major carriers and a market shift toward slower, lower-cost shipping options created an environment that was difficult for the startup to navigate. In July 2024, Maergo ceased operations.
