The story of madebymade begins in a garage in Leipzig, Germany, with founders Kai Hempel, Dr. Jonas Finck, and Henrik Reichstein. Their vision was to create a sustainable source of animal protein for the animal feed industry by breeding insects. They focused on the black soldier fly, developing a process to convert organic residues into high-quality proteins, fats, and fertilizers. A key turning point came with initial funding from a local investor, Golzern Holding GmbH, which financed their pre-seed phase. This allowed them to move out of the garage and begin converting a former pellet plant into a modern insect breeding facility in March 2018. In early 2020, KAURI CAB GmbH also came on board as an investor. By early 2021, the company completed its first industrial-scale insect breeding plant, notable for its modular design using shipping containers. The company has also received support from the European Union's LIFE funding program and was named "Best EU backed sustainability startup" in 2021. Today, madebymade operates on an area of over 2500m², with plans for significant expansion.
