Mädchenflohmarkt GmbH operates a prominent online marketplace in Germany for second-hand fashion, connecting a large community of buyers and sellers. The company was founded in Stuttgart in 2012 by Maria Spilka, Peter Ambrozy, and Thorsten Lückemeier. The founders leveraged their previous experience from the fashion platform Edelight, where Ambrozy was founder and CEO, and Lückemeier was Head of Marketing, to launch Mädchenflohmarkt. Spilka joined them to develop the online marketplace concept, which evolved from successful physical flea market events they had previously organized.
The business functions primarily as a C2C platform where users can buy and sell pre-owned clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories. Revenue is generated through commissions on sales. For items listed and shipped directly by users, the platform takes a 10% commission. A key feature is its "Concierge Service," where the company handles the entire sales process for the seller—including product photography, description writing, listing, and shipping—in exchange for a higher commission of 30-40% of the sales price. This service is designed for users with high-quality items who lack the time to manage sales themselves.
The platform serves a broad market of fashion-conscious consumers looking for sustainable and affordable options, from high-street brands to designer labels. Over the years, it attracted over two million registered users. However, the company faced significant financial challenges, leading to user complaints about delayed payments in early 2023. These issues culminated in the company filing for insolvency in June 2023. In August 2023, the business was acquired out of insolvency by MFG Recommerce GmbH, a company associated with Christian Wegner, the founder of Momox, another major player in the European re-commerce market. Following the acquisition, the brand and website continue to operate, with a new strategy that includes opening the marketplace to B2C partners, allowing other second-hand retailers to sell on the platform. Co-founder Maria Spilka departed the company in March 2025 after the restructuring.
