Lumi Story AI is a technology firm providing a generative AI-powered platform for storytellers. The company was established in 2023 by former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick, who also serves as CEO. The venture's creation was motivated by Kaepernick's own experiences with the high costs, prolonged timelines, and gatekeeping prevalent in the media and publishing industries through his other companies, Ra Vision Media and Kaepernick Publishing.
In July 2024, the Las Vegas-based company announced it had raised $4 million in a seed funding round. The round was led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with participation from Kapor Capital, Impellent Ventures, and several angel investors. The company is positioned to address the dependency on traditional industry gatekeepers by offering creators tools for independent work.
The platform offers an end-to-end solution for content creation, enabling users to independently create, publish, and merchandise their stories in both digital and physical formats. It utilizes AI to assist with various stages of the creative process, including ideation, character development, scriptwriting, and image generation. This allows creators to retain full ownership of their work while the platform manages the logistical aspects of production, distribution, and merchandising. The business model operates on a subscription basis, with monthly fees ranging from $20 to $75 for access to its suite of tools. Initially, Lumi Story AI is targeting the comic book, graphic novel, and manga markets, with plans to expand into video and other media. The company is also working with K-12 schools, where students use the platform to create comics and graphic novels in the classroom.
