Lottoland, founded in May 2013 by David Rosen, operates as an online platform for lottery betting. Headquartered in Gibraltar, the company began with a small team of seven and has since expanded to over 400 employees, serving more than 20 million customers across 15 markets on four continents. The CEO of the privately owned company is Nigel Birrell.
David Rosen is a serial entrepreneur with ventures in fintech, fashion, real estate, and gaming. His entrepreneurial journey started in 2002 with CareerConcept, a business focused on funding higher education. In 2006, the World Economic Forum recognized him as a 'Young Global Leader'. Before Lottoland, he founded the fashion label VONROSEN, which gained attention when Steve Jobs wore one of its turtlenecks.
Lottoland's core business is offering bets on the outcomes of over 30 international lottery draws, such as PowerBall and MegaMillions from the US, as well as EuroMillions and EuroJackpot. This model allows customers to participate in lotteries not typically available in their own countries. Instead of purchasing an official lottery ticket on behalf of the customer, Lottoland takes the bet and pays out the winnings directly if the customer's numbers match the official draw. Revenue is generated from the sale of these bets. To guarantee payouts for large jackpots, Lottoland uses a model backed by insurance policies (Insurance-Linked Securities). For smaller prize tiers, winnings are paid from the revenue generated by ticket sales.
Beyond lottery betting, the company has diversified its product portfolio to include digital scratch cards, online table games, card games, slot games, and, since 2019, sports betting. The company has achieved significant milestones, including being named Lottery Operator of the Year at the 2017 International Gaming Awards and securing a Guinness World Record in 2018 for the largest online gaming payout of €90 million (£79 million).
