Lomotif is a social video-sharing platform developed in Singapore that allows users to create and share short music videos. The company was founded in 2014 by Paul Yang, Loh Xiu Hui, and Benjamin Chang. Paul Yang, who served as the CEO, drew upon his background as a filmmaking major and his passion for music and technology to create the platform. His vision was to provide artists and creators with user-friendly tools to produce high-quality videos and potentially monetize their work. The app was born from Yang's interest in the convergence of art and emerging technology, which he explored during his studies in Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore and Game Design at MIT.
The platform enables users to edit and mix video clips, add music from a large library, and incorporate filters and animated stickers. Lomotif's patented technology simplifies the video editing process, allowing users to create content with just a few taps. The business operates in the highly competitive short-form video market, positioning itself as an alternative to platforms like TikTok. Its primary clients are content creators, social media users, and brands looking to engage with audiences through video marketing. The business model was intended to focus on advertising and other monetization strategies following its acquisition. Before its acquisition, the company's growth was largely organic, driven by word-of-mouth.
In a significant milestone, Lomotif was acquired in 2021 by ZVV Media Partners, a joint venture between ZASH Global Media and Entertainment and Vinco Ventures, for approximately $125 million. This deal was one of the largest exits for a Singapore-based tech startup in recent years. Following the acquisition, Paul Yang continued to lead the company. The acquisition aimed to expand Lomotif's presence in North America and other international markets, leveraging ZASH's media and entertainment network. Subsequently, in late 2022, Vinco Ventures announced it had completed the acquisition of the joint venture, including Lomotif. However, reports from early 2024 indicate that Lomotif has undergone liquidation.
